Mark Ciavarella Jr.

The pain still all too fresh for Sandy Fonzo whose son committed suicide after he was sent to jail. Fonzo’s child, Edward Kenzakoski was among those placed in a juvenile detention center as part of  a nearly $3 million kickback scheme.

Kenzakoski was sent away for a first-time minor drug offense. Fonzo told the media her son was never the same after that, and she strongly suspects it led him to a decision to take his life.

Fonzo waited outside a Scranton Courthouse for former Luzerne County Judge Mark Ciavarella Jr. to come out. A federal jury found Ciavarella guily, but he remains free until his sentencing.

Prosecutors maintain Ciavarella should serve 13 to 15 years.

Mr. Zager’s career in journalism is ripped from the pages of an adventure novel. Upon graduating from the esteemed Newhouse School of Public Communications, he headed north, about as far as one can travel and still stand in the Continental U.S. The call of journalism not a penchant to play with Polar Bears brought Zager to the ‘Last Frontier-Juneau, Alaska. Over the course of Zager’s more than 20 years in journalism, he has covered the political side of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill, dodged horse manure on the backside of Churchill Downs, and has uncovered numerous scams and scam artists. Eric is constantly in search of a meaningful story to tell. - Email Eric Zager
