Japan’s Disaster is Chernobyl Size

The announcement came less than 24 hours after Japan told people living up to 20 miles from the facility to evacuate. The rating puts Japan’s crisis on an even footing with the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986. Still authorities in Japan downplayed it, saying damage caused by Chernobyl far exceeds Fukushima.

In Philadelphia, water experts are trying to find the source of a common component of nuclear reactors, and in Pennsylvania’s divided House, lawmakers passed a controversial bill severely limiting how much money plaintiffs’ can collect in civil liability suits.

Rock The Capital Minute

In this edition of Rock The Capital Minute, radiation levels outside a Japanese nuclear power plant soared after a reactor caught fire. Over the past couple of days two reactors have exploded in the aftermath of that earthquake and tsunami. Roughly 145,000 people have been ordered to stay in their homes. In Germany, Chancellor Merkel ordered the temporary shutdown of 7 of its 17 reactors, and in Pennsylvania a committee is holding a hearing on what led to two deadly natural gas explosions since January.
