Pressure or Common Sense at Pennsylvania’s DEP

Is it political pressure, or common sense that once again prevails at Pennsylvania’s Department of Environmental Protection? The DEP is backpedaling on a policy change it made only a few short weeks ago that hamstrung inspectors in the Marcellus Shale and cast a jaundiced eye on DEP’s, then Acting Secretary, Michael Krancer. Krancer has since been appointed to the position.

Credibility in Question at Pennsylvania’s Department of Environmental Protection

Pennsylvanian’s now truly must question whose in charge of policing gas drillers in the Marcellus Shale. Inspectors with the Department of Environmental Protection can no longer issue citations to companies without getting prior approval from new DEP Secretary Michael Krancer.

Rock The Capital Minute

In this edition of Rock The Capital Minute, excessive radiation is turning up as far as 25 miles from the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant, but Japanese authorities are still telling folks within an 18 mile radius to abandon their homes. The level of radiation is also rising in seawater. In Pennsylvania, inspectors with the DEP first have to get approval from DEP Secretary Michael Krancer before issuing citations. This is a sudden departure and it is unprecedented. Environmental groups are extremely concerned about the changes.

State Police in Pennsylvania were back at it again — removing garbage trucks and drivers from roadways. As usual, troopers found loads of problems with brakes.

Drivers hauling wastewater from the Marcellus Shale are still learning that their trucks better be in tip-top shape. The Pennsylvania State Police inspected more than 1,400 trucks of those roughly 1600, 75% of the drivers were cited for faulty equipment.
