Fukushima Paralyzes Japan’s Fishing Industry

With the level of radiation rising in seawater near the Fukushima Dai-ichi power plant, the Japanese government is setting safety standards for the consumption of fish. That after finding fish carrying sky high loads of radiation. Tests were conducted on some species recovered about 50 miles from Fukushima, in water that is, if the readings are correct, several million times over Japan’s legal limit.

In this edition of Rock The Capital Minute; a grim discovery at the Fukushima nuclear power plant: plutonium is turning up in the soil. That is another strong indicator that the plant has experienced at least a partial melt down of fuel rods. In Pennsylvania and a handful of other states growing concerns that Japan’s nuclear crisis could spill over. Conclusive tests show Iodine 131 in some of Pennsylvania’s waterways. Its a byproduct of rain and nuclear specialists say the level is well below the acceptable rate. Auditor General Jack Wagner wants to hold hearings on what to do with tobacco settlement money. It has always been earmarked for health care, but now Governor Corbett wants to shift how the state spends that cash.

The Department of Environmental Protection in Pennsylvania has ordered the immediate shutdown of a waste water hauling company near Pittsburgh, following allegations that it has illegally been dumping contaminated gas drilling water. And today is World Water Day.
