Bridges & Dead Trout

To most of us, “energy” means gasoline and electricity. In news reports and advertising, the connection is regularly reiterated. Most of us, I suspect from talking to folks, think of a Toyota Prius or Chevy Volt as cars which do not pollute the air. They run on electricity, and electricity is clean. Right?

“A little rebellion…”

At a time when increasing numbers of our people are out of work, when the cost of getting to work is on the rise, and when far too many of our young men and women take their Senior Trip to exotic places such as Iraq and Afghanistan at least partly because there is nothing for them to do by staying home …

Rock The Capital Minute

In this edition of Rock The Capital Minute; RTC’s John Messeder reports that a public school in Gettysburg is weighing whether or not to close a school as it tries to balance a $2 million dollar budget shortfall. Pennsylvania’s Legislative Reapportionment Commission met for the first time with Judge Stephen McEwen at the helm. RTC and a Democracy Rising investigation revealed that McEwen is serving on the bench past an age limit, which calls into question his appointment to the commission. Newt Gingrich is officially seeking the Republican presidential nomination. Gingrich is set to unveil a new contract with America, but he is bogged down with questions about his past indiscretions.

A new K-12 system will not be free

Step One: Make taxpayers believe they are paying for substandard schools, using standardized testing criteria virtually impossible to meet, then blame teachers for the failure.

Step Two: Make taxpayers believe they can have a better education, for free.

Rock The Capital Minute

In this edition of Rock The Capital Minute; a new study by a researcher at Cornell University finds that drilling for natural gas does more harm to the environment than mining for coal. Tokyo Electric says it is working on a plan to end the nuclear crisis in Japan, and Pennsylvania could have a new resort casino by tomorrow; at least on paper.

Notes & Asides

Your all grows’d up and your all grows’d up! Did anyone else find it more than a little amusing for the President – who makes more time to relax than Hef most weeks – decided to chide the opposition with being immature in budget negotiations? While I will admit that I am concerned Congress is debating a shutdown over a couple billion when the real fight over $6Trillion looms, did it ever occur to the President that this budget was supposed to be passed LAST year?

Welcome Aboard John

I strongly suspect he’d be more than happy to talk about his travails in exchange for a frosty mug and a plate of heartiness. John has been writing about education, government and the environment for a good chunk of his life.

Going Home to Glory as Observed by One

What if nobody showed up to observe history? Well, in one way it nearly happened in Gettysburg. Fortunately for us, Rock The Capital’s T.W. Burger was on hand to record a day’s event worth reading about.

And they want one in Gettysburg?

And they want one in Gettysburg?

I hadn’t even hit the floor before the church lady had turned back to the slot machine and set it to whirring again. But more about that in a moment. A local businessman and some cohorts are making a bid to open a slots casino just a short distance from the Gettysburg battlefield, less than a […]
