Newt started his talk with this question: who wouldn’t take 70% of the vote in any election? Obviously, for a room full of donors and long shot challengers (2 of 16 of us would prevail), the answer was an unsurprising no one. So why, he asks, do we not advance any or all of the 29 issues he identified as 70% issues with the American people, issues that the GOP already supported?

love the unofficial holidays like election day – a holiday for those of us who work these issues year round, that is. For political operatives we election day is perhaps the one day you can’t get an elected official to meet, have lunch, or consider your issues; rather, they are trying to help compatriots get elected or keep their own gig. It never ceases to amaze me how hard even unopposed candidates want to appear, as if the hard work seeking the office will demonstrate willingness to do the same once in office – even with all evidence to the contrary in many cases.

magine the following scenario.

The Governor of a large industrial state – one that allows anonymous coordinated campaign contributions – is widely regarded as being an “enemy” of unions. That Governor, who benefitted from millions of dollars of these types of expenditures from corporate donors, decides that he wants to know what the unions actually spent, so he asks for a bill that would require disclosure.
