Chesapeake’s Jaw Dropping Fine

The Pennsylvania Department has ordered Chesapeake Energy to pay a $1 million dollar plus fine. The fine takes into account water wells contaminated in Bradford County and a fire in Washington County last February.
That represents the largest monetary fine issued by the DEP against a gas driller.

The DEP is backpedaling on a policy change it made only a few short weeks ago that hamstrung inspectors in the Marcellus Shale and cast a jaundiced eye on DEP’s, then Acting Secretary, Michael Krancer. Krancer has since been appointed to the position.

Pennsylvanian’s now truly must question whose in charge of policing gas drillers in the Marcellus Shale. Inspectors with the Department of Environmental Protection can no longer issue citations to companies without getting prior approval from new DEP Secretary Michael Krancer.

The former head of PHEAA’s foundation is talking exclusively to Rock The Capital. Michael Hershock was terminated in 2009 and he just received a hefty settlement. Hershock still does not believe he did anything wrong, and his expenses along with his $150,000 a year salary for a part-time job were well justified.
